Supplement vs. Real Food: SP2 Bridges the Gap

Those of you that know me personally know that I love my greens. You can catch me with a green smoothie every morning and a “trough” of a salad every night. But I do understand that it’s not easy to eat like a rabbit all day every day. Our lives are busy, plain and simple, so many of us turn to supplements to get essential nutrients. As a registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN), when making recommendations for supplement use, I want to be sure to emphasize that we should get as much nutrition from real food as we can. Endurance athlete’s bodies demand more vitamins and minerals than the average person in order to keep up with the massive hours of training. Therefore we turn to supplements to maintain performance and also recover properly. Note that by definition supplements are meant to make up for what may lack in our regular diet.

You may be asking yourself, “how do I know if I need supplements?” or “how do I apply this idea to my everyday life choices?” Well, choosing nutrient dense foods will help you perform better, feel stronger, and lend to your long-term health. The simplest tip I can give is to eat in COLOR. If your plate is full of a variety of colors, you are more likely to be getting all of your necessary nutrients. But again, you may still need certain supplements to get essential nutrients that you just can’t get enough of from your dinner salad.

So, I’ve found a product that bridges the gap between supplements and real food. It’s called SP2 Life. Spirulina is an ultimate superfood, and it’s the ONLY ingredient packed into an easy to use pod. In a single serving of SP2, you get a complete plant-based protein, A B C D E vitamins, and high concentrations of vital minerals such as potassium, calcium, chromium, copper, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, selenium, sodium, zinc and bio-available iron. I will dive into the nutrition science of all of these properties of spirulina in future blogs. This is merely scratching the surface…

The take-away message here is YOU’VE GOTTA TRY SP2 LIFE! It’s almost too easy to pack this superfood into your normal routine. Add it to smoothies, drinks, sauces, grains, even to insta-pot meals. I add a cube to my recovery smoothie every day and absolutely love it.

Always remember, a well-fueled body will undoubtedly perform better. But, supplement use is a complex web on information, so talk with a dietitian (like me!) before changing your diet or buying a bunch of bottles of pills/powders/potions. Let’s figure out the right balance for you to reach your true athletic potential with a well fueled machine of a body.

The Journey Begins

Wow, I’m finally doing a blog… I actually am asked quite often to share my stories, recipes, tips-n-tricks, etc. and have always thought that it would take too much time. In reality, this is the best way for me to have a voice, for anyone who cares to blog along with me (that’s proper wording right?!). So, if you are taking the time to read what I have to say, thanks. I truly hope to keep you interested and entertained, maybe even inspired to try some new things that your health and fitness needs, as that is the focus of this nutrition platform.

Let’s start with a little about me… Hi! I’m Breanne. People call me Breanne, Bre, Breezy, B and a few other nicknames that could take an entire blog alone to explain  I like to ride bikes, practice hot yoga, play with my puppies Luna and Vino, and run our coaching business with the love of my life. Dave Harward (whom I’m beyond luck to be marrying 8-18-18) is the mastermind behind PLAN7 Endurance Coaching. He started it in 2006 and it has grown into a pretty special family of athletes from multiple disciplines and abilities. I truly mean it when I say that our clients are our friends, and we love everyone like family. I’m the nutrition coach. It’s really cool for me to be able to use my Masters in degree in Nutrition and Sport Dietetics to work with my colleagues (even some competitors!) on fueling for optimal performance. I get to help people figure out the best nutrition strategy for them to accomplish their goals. It’s a pretty sweet gig.

Instead of delving into my life story and upbringing, I’ll simply say that I’ve grown up in Utah, I have a lovely family, the cutest fur baby pups and partner anyone could ask for, and my passion for cycling is beyond rationale. I chose a career focused on nutrition for endurance athletes as I was learning to fuel myself while pursuing a professional career on the bike. I was lucky enough to race with the DNA Cycling team from the inaugural year through 2017 and still race as PLAN7DS (Death Squad!) on road and gravel. So many amazing experiences during those years of racing that I like to think have helped me be a better dietitian for athletes, having “walked the walk” or pedal, if you will.

So, that’s enough for this first post. What I mostly want to convey to anyone reading is that I will do my very best to share my experiences and knowledge about food. My goal is to provide information on sport nutrition, but keep it human. Please send me questions, requests, anything you want to learn about. Whether it me about the science behind any foods, fads, fun facts, or anything personal about me… I’m an open book, rather an open blog
